TENNIS: Zverev Beats Djokovic in ATP Finals

Third seed defeated world number one to win his maiden title- the biggest title of his carrer- in a dominant fashion at London’s O2 Arena.

The 21-year-old already has three Masters 1000 titles to his name but this is a victory of a higher grade. He might have beaten and Djokovic in those finals but to beat both in little over 24 hours is an impressive feat indeed. And to do it when his opponent, the best player in the world, is playing so well is all the more outstanding.

The German showed little fear of his opponent’s scintillating form in a high-quality final as he dispatched the 14-time Grand Slam champion 6-4, 6-3.

First seed Djokovic has not dropped a single set since the start of the ATP Finals with straight sets victory over John Isner, Marin Cilic and Zverev himself in the group stage, he also dispatched Kevin Anderson in a scintillating manner a day earlier.

The youngest finalist in nine years at just 21, Zverev finally delivered on the promise that has seen him win three Masters titles and become the shining light of a ‘next generation’ of up-and-coming tennis stars looking to upset the established order.

Zverev became the youngest winner in a decade and the first German since 1995 to win the end of the year ATP finals.
