Arsenal boss Unai Emery has revealed striker Danny Welbeck has suffered a broken ankle and confirmed he has undergone surgery.
Welbeck suffered the injury after landing awkwardly during the 0-0 draw with Sporting Lisbon on Thursday.
The 27-year-old spent the evening in hospital and Emery has confirmed the England international had an operation to correct the injury on Friday.
“Danny Welbeck’s injury is a big injury,” said Emery. “We spoke with him yesterday and today. We support him with our personal relationship between the player and the staff. I think he is not going to be with us for a long time.”
When asked if Welbeck had suffered a broken ankle as previously suspected, Emery added: “Yes. He had an operation on Friday.”
