Crisis in Akwa-Ibom Assembly Over Lawmaker’s Sack
His sack was allegedly due to his defection from the People’s Democratic Party to the All Progressive Congress.
Reports say that Itue, who could not secure the court backing for his defection, allegedly led a group of thugs to the state assembly complex to disrupt the plenary on Monday, November 19.
According to Legit.ng, Ituen’s alleged invasion of the assembly with thugs might be connected with a move by the speaker of the state to declare his seat vacant in line with the directive given by Uyo court on Friday, November 16.
Earlier, PDP made a statement alarming the public on alleged plan to disrupt the plenary process.
PDP said: “We are in receipt of credible intelligence highlighting plans by the opposition APC to use thugs to invade the Akwa Ibom state house of assembly and prevent the house from carrying out its legitimate business of law making.
“The thugs, we have been reliably informed, are camped in Ikot Ekpene and will be conveyed in buses to Uyo where they are expected to board tricycles in pairs and head towards the assembly.”
The party also expressed that the expected thugs were sponsored by APC and led by the embattled lawmaker.
It added: “Another set of thugs are expected to accompany the ousted lawmaker, Idongesit Ituen to attempt to force his way into the assembly.
“The motive of this invasion is to prevent the speaker from declaring vacant the seat of the sacked legislator.”
The party also claimed it briefed the security operatives on the alleged plan, adding that the assembly must be protected against the federal might.
It said: “We have alerted security agencies to prevent any attack on the symbol of democracy. The state assembly must be protected and allowed to function properly without any distraction.”
