Atiku, Other PDP Chieftains, Explains Choice of Obi as Atiku's Running Mate
The Tuesday,November 26 visit was reportedly to appease the deputy senate president who is allegedly aggrieved over the choice of Peter Obi as Atiku’s running mate in the 2019 general elections.
This is also coming after Ekweremadu as well as other governors from the South East were absent in the ceremony marking the installation of Atiku as the Waziri of Adamawa on Sunday.
The PDP paid the visit to explain the choice of Peter Obi as running mate and to appease Obi who has been allegedly aggrieved over the choice of Obi without his consent as the highest ranking Igbo official in the current administration.
There had also been reports that the senator was promised the ticket by Atiku Abubakar before the party primaries.
According to reports from Punch, the entourage of Atiku were the director general of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council and president of the Senate, Bukola Saraki; national chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus; and the national organising secretary of the party, Colonel Austin Akobundu (rtd.).
The Punch also quoted a source who said: “He was told that Obi does not have any corruption case against him and that he does not belong to any faction of the party.
“He was also told that Obi’s emergence has further raised the acceptability level of the PDP across the country.”
Punch’s report also the visit was meant to appease Ekweremadu, who had hoped that he would be the natural choice for the position, with the PDP visitors explaining that Obi was picked in the interest of the zone in particular and the nation in general.
