Buhari Commends Swiss Government For Returning Looted Funds
Buhari Praises Swiss Government For Commitment to Nigeria's Development
President Muhammadu Buhari has on Tuesday, December 11, commended the government of Switzerland for returning illegally stolen funds stashed away in the country.
He expressed his heart felt gratitude while receiving letters of credence from the Ambassador of Switzerland to Nigeria, Mr George Steiner, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
President Buhari praised the Swiss government for also intervening in the North-East crisis, adding that their interventions indicate their commitment to Nigeria’s development.
“We are grateful to the Swiss government for allowing the illegally stolen funds to be brought back to Nigeria,” the president said as quoted in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.
Responding to the commendation, the ambassador told President Buhari that Switzerland would continue to support Nigeria, especially in order to end the conflict and the plight of Internally Displaced Persons in the North-East.
“We have strong and solid relations with Nigeria.
“It is an honour and privilege for us to contribute to issues of importance in the country,” Steiner said.
This is coming after Switzerland returned $322.5m (N116.1bn), which Abacha looted, to Nigeria in December, 2017.
The Swiss government returned the money the former head of state stashed ($321m) with $1.5m interest.
