Sex-For-marks: Professor Sentenced to 2 Years Imprisonment
Professor Richard Akindele, a former lecturer of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), has been sentenced to two years in prison for demanding sex from his student, Monica Osagie, as a requirement to pass is course.
This is following a plea by the accused to change his not-guilty plea as earlier stated to guilty.
He was convicted at a court sitting in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on Monday, December 17.
The presiding judge, Justice Maureen Onyetenu said regardless of the plea bargain arrived at by the parties, Akindele should be used as a scapegoat to stop molestation of female students by higher institutions’ lecturers.
She sentenced Akindele to 24 months jail term for asking Monica for sex, and another 24 months’ jail term for soliciting sexual benefit from the student to pass her.
She also sentenced the professor to 12 months’ jail term for deleting parts of his conversation with Monica to hide evidence and another 12 months’ jail term for falsification of age, adding that both sentences will run concurrently.
She added that plea bargain could apply when public interest was involved, however Akindele’s case was different as many female students had been turned to sex slaves by lecturers.
“The menace is getting to secondary and primary schools. I am a pastor and counsellor. I know the mental torture that many of our female students have been subjected to by the likes of the respondent.
“The adverse effect of such action is huge. Many of his likes have been awarding marks to students that are ready to warm their bed, thereby releasing half-baked graduates into the society,” the Justice said.
Akindele had been arraigned in November by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) before a Federal High Court sitting in Osun.
