As many as seven soldiers have been killed in a helicopter crash in Egypt.

The soldiers are reported to have been killed in a plane crash in Egypt after the aircraft suffered a “technical failure.”

The aircraft involved is understood to have been a reconnaissance plane, an aircraft involved in military operations, reports Sky News Arabia.

American peacekeepers are alleged to have been onboard the flight, but this has not been confirmed by authorities.

The crash is said to have taken place in the desert in South Sinai.

It is not clear what caused it.

Sky News Arabia reported seven soldiers from America, France and the Czech Republic were killed in the crash.

The broadcaster tweeted that the helicopter was from the International Observer Force.

The peacekeeping force – full name the Multinational Force and Observers – oversees the terms of the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.

It was co-founded by Israel in 1979 when it signed a peace deal with Egypt but is not linked to the United Nations.

Sky News Arabia tweeted: “Our correspondent in Cairo: American peacekeepers were wounded in South Sinai, after a reconnaissance plane fell due to a technical failure.”

In further tweets, the broadcaster said seven soldiers “of different nationalities” were killed in the “crash of a helicopter of the International Observer Force in Sinai”.

It added: “The dead soldiers in Sinai are five Americans, a French and a Czech.”

Brad Lynch, an MFO official, said the organisation was “actively investigating an incident involving one of our helicopters today”, MailOnline reported.

He did not give further details.
